ELON MUSK WANTS TO BRING THE WHOLE WORLD ONLINE WITH AFFORDABLE SATELLITES

Welcome to the Weekend Tech Round-up.

Tesla and SpaceX founder, Elon Musk wants to bring affordable internet access to the world.

Elon Musk is currently collaborating with Greg Wyler, former Google Inc. executive and founder of WorldVu Satellites Ltd., to build small, low-cost internet satellites that provide affordable internet to everyone on the planet.

The goal – 700 internet satellites. Each of those satellites to cost less than $1 million to build and weight less than 250 pounds, (about half the size of the smallest communications satellites currently in use). If successful the satellite constellation would be 10 times the size of the largest current fleet, managed by Iridium Communications Inc.

Elon is not the first only one trying to prove low cost internet to the world:

Google launched Project Loon which aims to use balloons to deliver internet to the furthest reaches of our planet. People can then connect to the balloon network using a special Internet antenna attached to their building, giving internet access to the user.

Facebook were in talks to take over an American-based aerospace company, Titan Aerospace. Facebook’s plan was to use drones to bring internet access to an estimated 2.7 billion people who currently have none.

The race to provide cheap and effective internet access to everybody on the planet is well and truly underway.
