09 May IS APPLE TRYING TO BUY ITS ‘COOL’ BACK?
If your mission is to make the best products in the world, acquiring Beats seems like a strange move.
So why would Apple purchase Beats?
Their headphones fall very short of the best in the market and are consistently slammed by critics. Maybe Apple is buying Beats for its streaming service? I doubt it. From all account’s the Beats streaming service also falls very short of the mark, and is nowhere near as good as other services like Spotify.
So why Beats?
Maybe Apple is trying to buy back some of the ‘cool’ its lost over the last few years? Yahoo attempted to buy ‘cool’. It spent billion dollars on Tumblr. Did it work? The short-term impact was certainly noticeable. The one thing you can’t deny is Beats is cool. A lot of the brand’s equity comes from its co-founder, Dr Dre, (in my opinion) one of music’s coolest and most influential producers. Here in Bangkok every second street stall sells counterfeit Beats headphones. I can’t even begin to imagine how bad these fake headphones sound, but people purchase them and wear them proudly.
Whatever the reason, the news has got much of the tech and music world scratching its head. We’ll definitely be watching this one closely.
