You Are More Than Your Title

You Are More Than Your Title

On a recent retreat, my yoga host shared a beautiful story from a book — one that stayed with me deeply.

We often live in a quiet misidentification of who we are. In truth, we are all the ocean.

When we are born, we begin as gentle waves — just forming, just moving. As life unfolds, some waves grow bigger, some remain small, some appear more graceful or more powerful. Along the way, we naturally start comparing ourselves to others, wondering why one wave seems more successful, more accomplished, or more significant than ours.

This happens in our working lives too.

In the workplace, we can sometimes become attached to titles, positions, achievements, or roles. We may define ourselves by our job descriptions, compare our progress with colleagues, or believe our value is determined by the size of our responsibilities.

But the story offers a different perspective.

Every wave, no matter its shape or size, eventually returns to the ocean — because it was never separate to begin with.

Perhaps the same is true for us. Beyond our roles and titles, we are all part of something bigger. Every person contributes in a unique way. Some lead, some create, some support, some innovate — but every wave matters because every wave belongs to the same ocean.

A gentle reminder for all of us: your title may describe what you do, but it does not define who you are.

Your value is far greater than your position. Continue growing, continue contributing, and remember that each of us plays a meaningful part in creating something greater together. 🌊
