AWARE’S FIRST AUGMENTED REALITY APP

Yesterday was the last day you could purchase Google Glass in its current form. Many have labeled Glass a failed consumer product, and they wouldn’t be wrong so you may ask yourself why we’ve created, and are talking about our Google Glass app? The answer is simple, the technology for AR (augmented reality) devices is in its infancy, and Glass is a product aimed at the early adaptors, people who can see the potential 5, 10, 20 years down the track, experiment and hopefully push it too it’s limits. Where Glass has been successful is sparking imaginative ideas. As a Google spokesperson said, “The idea behind the Explorer program was always to see how people would use the technology”.

The early versions of Glass gave Aware’s Mobile Development team a chance to flex their muscles in a different way. It was a chance to try something new and push the technological boundaries of the team. What they came up with was Visit Aware, a simple and fun way of introducing guests to our Chiang Mai office. The app takes advantage of the location and marker based AR technology in Glass and has two key functions: Visit Aware and Explore Aware.

Visit Aware is a simple walk through of the Aware story. The info is presented through text, images and voice recordings and gives the user a unique insight into what we do and how we do it.

Explore Aware lets the user tour our office. This can be done as a walking tour where the marker-based AR recognizes certain images, and triggers actions such as video playback and audio playback that provide more insight into the team, or for those who would like a more laid back tour, the location-based AR detects nearby locations and lets the user relax with a coffee on the couch and scroll through the different departments and location of our Chiang Mai office.

So there you have it, our first venture into AR. It was a great experience for the team, and as these devices continue to evolve and gain popularity we plan to look at new ways to innovate on them, in fact I think it’s time for an Aware Smart watch app. Back to the brainstorming room for some creative thinking.
